The capacity for courage lies within all of us and there are ways to increase it. The ability to control your fears and increase your willingness to act is a skill that can be cultivated and acquired.
When we develop the habit of courage, a new world of possibilities opens up to us. By objectively analyzing your fears, you can begin the process of eliminating them.
We often fear failure. We also tend to exaggerate the possible consequences of failure. That exaggerated fear of failure can prevent us from taking action. We need to understand that in order to succeed at anything in life, we first need to confront our fear of failure.
Rather than focusing exclusively on avoiding failure, we need to recognize and accept failure as a natural part of success. We need to work tirelessly to avoid failure. We need to persist, pivot, and persevere, as we encounter obstacles, but we should never allow our fear of failure to paralyze us or prevent us from taking action.
We need to confront our fears and evaluate them realistically and objectively by asking “what’s the worst that can happen?” So what if I fail, how badly can that failure hurt me? If the answer is “not that badly” and you believe the risk is justified, then you need to take action. It doesn’t matter how many times you fail, especially if the failures only create minor setbacks. What matters is your dedication and commitment to success.
See each failure as an opportunity to learn, make adjustments, and keep trying. Never interpret failure as a sign of weakness. It’s not. Rather it’s an integral part of the learning process that leads to success. Failure gives us valuable feedback on what we need to work on next. If you’re not failing, you’re not trying. You’re not reaching and you’re not growing.
In everything you do, every time you have the courage to try something new, you will either succeed or you will fail. In either case, you will gain valuable knowledge from that experience. Often you will gain more knowledge from your failures. Both success and failure add value to your life. Success requires a willingness to fail. You can’t have success without it.
The first step is the most important step. You need to be willing to move out of your comfort zone with no guarantee of success. Action is magic! You cannot create change in your life without taking action. You must summon the courage to take action.
One way to get the courage to take action is to plan thoroughly in advance. The act of gathering information about a particular subject can cause us to become more courageous and confident. The courageous person is not fearless. Courageous people control their fears rather than allowing their fears to control them. When you confront your fears, your self-respect and self-confidence grow.
Set clear goals and objectives. Gather information. Read and do research. Prepare a plan of action and then take that important first step. With each success, your confidence and courage will build, and your fears will diminish.
Simply by attempting to develop courage, you will begin to set more challenging and exciting goals for yourself. You will have the confidence of knowing that you can achieve your goals. You will be able to face every situation with a self-confidence born out of having overcome your fears. Through each action you take and each success you experience, you will begin to conquer your fears and develop courage.
